Abstract: In the realm of pharmaceuticals, the reliability of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) supply chains stands as a cornerstone for ensuring consistent access to vital medications worldwide. APIs, the core components responsible for a drug's therapeutic effect, necessitate robust and dependable supply chains to maintain uninterrupted production and distribution. This pivotal work unveils a ground-breaking model tailored to gauge the reliability of pharmaceutical supply chains, accurately examining three pivotal dimensions: configuration refinement, disruption risk mitigation, and recovery efficacy. Leveraging data collected from prominent drug shortage repositories and a compelling case study focussed on a generic Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API), we precisely quantify essential metrics such as anticipated shortages, temporal thresholds to shortage occurrence, and expeditious recovery timelines. Our discernments unveil the transformative potential of even incremental enhancements, such as bolstering recovery velocity or curbing disruption incidence, in precipitating substantial diminishment in anticipated shortages. Of paramount significance, our analysis underscores the paradigm-shifting efficacy of integrating backup suppliers into lean configurations, explaining the fundamental role of redundancy in perfecting supply chain vulnerabilities. These revelations furnish actionable intelligence for policymakers and industry achievers, revealing the imperative of redundancy and quality fortifications in fortifying pharmaceutical supply chains against variations.
