Phenomenal Women in an Unequal World

Author(s): Aditi M. Mankar

Abstract: The waves of feminism began to end the gender discrimination and to bring gender equality. Some distinguished poets like Sylvia Plath, Margaret Atwood, Maya Angelou have one thing in common. They all are feminists! The feminist movement began with Mary Wollstonecraft’s revolutionary text on the vindication of the rights of woman in 1792. Since then the battle of equality and dignity is afoot. Second wave feminists like Sylvia Plath, Maya Angelou and Margaret Atwood came forward to express their emotions and experiences with their confessional poetry. Through poetry they exhibited their stories in order to empower other women to join this fight of freedom. This research paper purports to explore these phenomenal poets who despite the resistance never backed up and continued to thrive in this male dominated society. Their unique contribution not only inspired women across the globe but also helped them in identifying their self-worth.

Keywords: Feminism, Second Wave, Oppression, Confessional poetry, patriarchy, objectification.
