Abstract: The present study “Transcending the Self: Re-imaging Womanhood in The Exercise Book” harkens to the female footfall muffled by oppression and neglect. The study is done based on the characters in Rabindranath Tagore’s The Exercise Book, who is always in search of their own identity, who are discriminated on the basis of gender and how they perform their roles, varied conflicts they have in their family. The objectives of the study were; to explore the silences of women, to identify the power structures and hierarchies at play, and to identify how the values, relationships and hierarchical structures of the family influence the women characters.
