Abstract: The Panchayat Raj system forms the foundation of rural governance in India, fostering participatory democracy and community-driven development. With the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act of 1992, a significant step was taken to ensure women's representation in Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) through mandated reservations. Maharashtra, a pioneering state in implementing progressive reforms, has witnessed a transformative impact due to women's active involvement in local governance. This paper explores the roles, challenges, and contributions of women in PRIs in Maharashtra. It also evaluates the implications of their leadership on rural development and gender equality, offering recommendations for enhanced participation.
