Abstract: A pre-experimental one group pre-test post-test design was used for the study. Non probability purposive sampling
technique was used to select sample that was 80 women of child bearing age at sheerbugh pattan Baramullah Kashmir. Data
was collected by using Structured interview schedule to assess knowledge regarding BSE.The prepared tool (structured
interview schedule) and intervention (standing operating procedure SOP) was validated by panel of experts. Pre testing of
the tool and intervention was done to check the clarity and feasibility. Pilot study was conducted on women of child bearing
age other than study sample to assess the feasibility of the study. The main study was conducted from 14th March 2018 to
21th April 2018. Pre- test was done by administering structured interview schedule following by demonstration of standing
operating procedure SOP regarding knowledge of breast self examination on the same day and on day 7th post test was
conducted by using same structured interview schedule. The data collected was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential
statistics.
The results of the study revealed that the mean pretest knowledge score was 9.36±4.71 and the mean post- test knowledge
score was 19.99±4.20 with the mean difference of 10.62 which was found to be statistically significant (p= 0.001) at 0.05
level of significance.This indicates that the standing operating procedure (SOP) was effective in improving the knowledge of
women of child bearing age.
The result also revealed that there was significant association between age, education and family income with the pre- test
knowledge score.
