Corporate Social Responsibility: An Overview

Author(s):Manju Devi1, Prof. Satyawan Baroda2

Abstract: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been a considerable topic of discussion in recent debates around social welfare and corporate strategies. Beginning in the 1940s, CSR has its roots in several important traditions such as philanthropy and radical ameliorative policies. In recent times, CSR has almost been fundamentally interwoven to the very idea of a corporation as a social entity performing social functions in a given setup. This paper aims to trace the historical development of CSR around the world as an integral part of business operation, the definitions that have been used contextually to forward the mission of CSR, the purposes that CSR fulfils in a business organization and social landscape, the basic principles that guide CSR in modern business operation, and its present status as a core concept in business strategies and firm identity in contemporary civil society. Using secondary data analysis and a comprehensive review of literature, the study shows that CSR indeed has positive meanings attached to the identity of a business organization whilst also forwarding the profit-seeking interests of the same. Additionally, CSR has also been shown to be paradoxical in its implementation, often doing more harm than good. In conclusion, this essay shows that CSR implementation has important managerial implications of strengthening the position of the firm in the business world and strengthening the bond between managers and the staff within organizations.
