A Study of Psychological Sufferings and Frustration in Anita Desai's Novel 'Cry, The Peacock'

Author(s): Deepak Gulia

Abstract: In Anita Desai's exploration of characters withdrawing from society to embrace a life of seclusion, she delves into the challenges inherent in such a decision. Whether forced by external circumstances or chosen willingly, solitude presents profound struggles for her primarily female protagonists, who grapple with intense inner conflicts. "Cry, The Peacock" tells the story of Maya, a young woman trapped in a loveless marriage. Bereft of her mother from a young age, Maya seeks affection outside her marital bonds and becomes deeply sensitive. Raised by an affectionate yet overprotective father, she clings to ideals of romance and love. Maya contends with an 'Electra Complex,' influencing her choice to wed a significantly older man. However, her husband, Gautama, starkly contrasts her father. He appears as a cold, detached intellectual, regarding Maya as a stubborn, pampered child in need of discipline and a dose of reality. Despite visible strains in their relationship, Gautama remains oblivious to Maya's loneliness, exacerbated by his condescending attitude. This paper endeavours to see how the novel reveals the trials of a woman through her psychological suffering and frustration.
